Since Keeping Up With the Kardashians first hit television screens in 2007, Kourtney Kardashian has established herself as a socialite, businesswoman and model. She has two sons and a daughter with her former partner, Scott Disick.
1Limit screen time
The Kardashian kids are allowed just 30 minutes of video game time per day during the week and an hour at weekends. Their mum also tries to avoid the use of any iPads, smartphones or devices during mealtimes.
“We used to let them use iPads at restaurants but we learned that didn’t always work for us. We want to be able to communicate and have conversations with the kids while eating together, so we try not to have TV or iPads out during breakfast, lunch or dinner,” says Kardashian.
2No fizzy drinks
Kardashian is known for trying to keep her diet – and that of her children – as healthy as possible. So it’s no surprise to learn she’s banned fizzy drinks in her home. She tries to avoid refined sugar where at all possible as she doesn’t like its addictive qualities.
“I don’t drink soda ever,” she explains. “I drink a ton of water during the day, and also a glass of water mixed with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar twice a day.”
3Bedtime routines are essential
Children should get used to going to sleep at the same time each night, says Kardashian. Having a regular routine in place helps them settle and gets them used to going to bed.
Telephones and devices are banned at bedtime. Instead, the Kardashian kids watch stars projected onto their bedroom ceilings while mum reads them stories. Then, she plays lullabies and stays with them while they fall asleep.
4You can manage with the basics
She says she used to leave the house with a bag packed full of everything she might possibly need for her kids. Now, though, Kardashian says she just throws the bare essentials into her handbag and finds it far easier.
“People used to have children in caves,” she says. You can manage just fine without the latest model of every single gadget.
5Avoid using microwave ovens
Even though microwaves are quick and easy to use, Kardashian says she is concerned about what they do to food. After having her eldest son, Mason, she was worried to read how toxins from plastic containers could be transferred to food during the heating process.
“I’ve heard that microwaves can leach nutrients from food and use radiation to heat it,” she says. “I’m not sure how accurate this is, but when it comes to my family, I play safe.”
6It’s ok to bend the rules sometimes
While Kardashian is generally pretty strict about her kids’ diets, she’s admitted there are times when she relaxes the rules. Every now and then, there’s nothing wrong with chilling out in front of the television with snacks or junk food. In fact, the family probably appreciates it more because it’s not something that happens all the time.
7Value yourself
While she adores her children, Kardashian knows she needs to look after her own wellbeing too. Whether it’s visiting the beauty salon or the gym, or just taking a little time out to do something she loves, focusing on herself sometimes is important.
